Chris Chibnall On Putting David Tennant And Arthur Darvill On Screen Together: I Thought It Would Explode The Internet

Chris Chibnall has revealed that he knew casting David Tennant and Arthur Darvill together in Broadchurch would be a huge fannish thrill for Whovians. Chris, who has written scripts for both the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors' eras in Doctor Who,has previously said that he wrote the part of Paul Coates specifically for Arthur and that David was one of the first actors that he cast. However, he told Digital Spy that it was still exciting to see the pair of them together.

"Funnily enough, there was a bit of a moment where we thought, 'Can we do that, or does it look a bit too in-jokey?' - but actually you just go, 'They're the best actors'.
"But certainly when they met at the read-through, I saw them approach each other and I thought, 'If I could get my camera-phone out now, it would explode the internet!'
"But it was just a delight, because as a writer and a producer, you think, 'I'd love to see those two actors in a scene together, because they're very interesting, powerful actors' - so that was the thrill of it.”

However, he would not be drawn on any details about the eagerly anticipated second series of Broadchurch, due to begin filming in early 2014.

It'll take us a while to do it, so there's no point talking about it now," he said. "When we're ready to tell you a little bit more, we will, but we deliberately kept our secrets with the first one and we'll try and do a little bit of the same with the second.
"I would take nothing for granted, I would just wait and see! We'll tell you when we're ready!"
