Doctor Who Wins Best Drama At The National Television Awards

Doctor Who won the Best Drama category in the 2014 National Television Awards this evening.

The show beat off stiff competition in the form of acclaimed crime drama Broadchurch, starring former Doctor Who star David Tennant, Call The Midwife and Downton Abbey. The show celebrated its 50th year in 2013 with a special anniversary episode, The Day Of The Doctor, that featured the return of David Tennant and Billie Piper and introduced John Hurt as a previously unknown incarnation of the Time Lord. The year culminated in Matt Smith's exit from the role as Peter Capaldi stepped in to take over as the new Doctor. The award was accepted on behalf of the show by Jenna Coleman who plays companion Clara.

Earlier on, Matt Smith scooped Best Drama performance for his role as the Doctor, winning against Miranda Hart, Maggie Smith and Martin Clunes.

Unfortunately Broadchurch's crime solving team David Tennant and Olivia Colman were both pipped to the post in the new Radio Times TV Detective Award which was won by Benedict Cumberbatch for Sherlock.

Penguins: Spy In The Huddle, which was narrated by David, also lost out to Educating Yorkshire in the Documentary category.
