What We Did On Our Holiday Set To Be One Of The High Profile UK Films Of The Year

Scottish newspaper The Scotsman is predicting great things for the new black comedy What We Did On Our Holiday when it is released in the UK this autumn. It is expected to be one of the most high profile British films of the year, mainly due to the star-studded cast: Billy Connolly stars as the eccentric septuagenarian Gordy with David Tennant and Ben Miller as his two sons Doug and Gavin. Other cast includes Rosamund Pike, Celia Imrie, Annette Crosbie and Amelia Bullmore, with a trio of rising child stars in Harriet Turnbull, Bobby Smalldridge and Emilia Jones. The film has since been sold around the world to screen in territories including Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia and Israel.

The movie also boasts an excellent creative team, being written and directed by the award winning pair Guy Jenkin and and Andy Hamilton, the creators of the BBC sitcom Outnumbered.

More plot details have been uncovered as Billy Connolly has revealed that his character in the film is battling cancer though he is trying to keep the fact from his family who have arrived to celebrate his birthday. Ironically the comedian discovered that he himself had been diagnosed with prostate cancer before starting work on the movie and kept his own condition secret until after the film had wrapped. He has since undergone surgery and been given the all clear by doctors.

Andy Hamilton said,
“Billy was initially very keen on the film when we first approached him and when we met him in London, he was really up for it. We were unaware of any health problems with Billy at all. We had no idea. As soon as we finished shooting, he e-mailed to let us know and he had an op for prostate cancer, which went very well. It was definitely a surprise.

“I'm sure he was being very stoic, especially when we buried him in the beach, covered in sand, for one scene, which was obviously not ideal for someone with prostate cancer.”

What We Did On Our Holiday is released on September 26th in the UK.
